Discounted Pet Desexing for July set to curb unexpected litters
Discounted Pet Desexing for July set to curb unexpected litters
The National Desexing Network, a program created by the Animal Welfare League of Qld, is
collaborating with nine Gold Coast vet clinics to offer the same discounted
desexing prices to the community to encourage people to desex their cats and
dogs, before the spring breeding season.
Joy Verrinder, AWLQ Strategic Development Officer said the NDN is grateful to the veterinary practices who
have agreed to join the desexing program for the month of July as it means
anyone from the far north of the coast to the southern end can easily access
these discounted prices.
For the month of July male cats will cost just $65 to be desexed while female cats will cost $95. Male
dogs start at $110 and female dogs start at $145. (Conditions apply for
pregnant or in season pets).
"Each year in the warmer months thousands of unwanted cats and kittens are collected as strays or handed
in to Animal Welfare League of Qld which puts an added pressure on our
non-profit organisation. Desexing your pet should be at the top of every
responsible pet owners list,” Ms Verrinder said.
Desexing your pet has lots of health and behavioural benefits including reducing territorial fights, and
escaping in dogs and cats. Desexed animals are usually more affectionate. Desexing also reduces the risk of mammary
and prostate cancers and feline diseases.
Cats can be pregnant from four to five months of age. To prevent accidental or early litters, kittens can be safely
desexed from two months of age and one kilogram in weight.
“It is ideal to desex your pets when they are kittens or puppies as the recovery process is much faster and
they are back to themselves again within hours of the operation," Ms
Verrinder said.
